Tourism began in the Gambia in 1965, when 300 Swedish tourists arrived in the country on a cruise. The cruise was organized by the Swedish Bertil Harding together with the tour operator Vingresor. The Gambia was seen as an excellent country to escape the cold northern winter, and in addition to the sun and beaches, Europeans were able to enjoy the local African culture. The number of tourists grew rapidly, with a total of 25,000 visiting the country in 1976. Today, the Gambian economy relies heavily on tourism, and the government is working to support its growth.
