The old town has an impressive 16th century church. São Bartolomeu de Messines is the birthplace of 19th century poet, João de Deus where there is a museum & art deco cinema named after him. Set slightly inland, yet still only a short drive to beaches & attractions. This tranquil & peaceful place is surrounded by hills, woodland & countryside & the Funcho & Arade dams fed by the river Arade. São Bartolomeu de Messines is not as touristic as some of the surrounding places like the nearby Medieval town of Silves but this fabulous town hosts several cultural events throughout the year. This certainly is a hidden gem of the Algarve. |
